In Remembrance of Our Parents & Our Great Ancestors
Yesterday, Benny Wenda attended the Galaxy Radio Parents and Ancestors Day in London, United Kingdom. The event was organised by the African and African Caribbean Community in London to remember and honour the parents and great ancestors of African and African Caribbean people, many of whom gave their lives to helping their nations be free.
Benny Wenda spoke to the people gathered and told them the story of the West Papuan people, how they too suffered under colonialism and slavery and are still suffering under it now. The event raised significant awareness for West Papua from the African and African Caribbean community in the UK who showed firm support for the liberation of West Papua from Indoensian colonialism.
In a written statement, Benny Wenda expressed:
“We West Papuans cannot yet celebrate our freedom when we and the spirits of our ancestors are still crying out for freedom.
Over 500,000 West Papuan people have been killed in a secret genocide and the occupation of our country. The Indonesian government treats us this way just because of the colour of our skin.
I hope that the African Caribbean people here in the United Kingdom and around the world will support us in our long struggle for freedom.
Please help to spread the message of my people, and I believe one day we will all finally live in a world with no colonialism or slavery and will be able to honour our brave parents and ancestors in peace.”
Thank you to everyone who came and showed support for the West Papuan freedom struggle.
