NATIVE WEST PAPUANS WERE FORCED TO CELEBRATE INDONESIAN INDEPENDENCE DAY ON SUNDAY MORNING, 17th OF AUGUST 2008

We received two reports from West Papua today. First report is from Enarotali – Paniai. At 2.00pm TNI/POLRI and government ordered/forced all the churches in Enarotali to do their prayer service at 06.00 and end the service at 08.00. This is not the normal prayer time in West Papua.

Benny Wenda and members of the Free West Papua Campaign (UK) were invited by the Archbishop of Papua New Guinea, the Most Reverend James Ayong, to speak at a gathering of Bishops from the Anglican Church of Papua New Guinea and the Anglican Church of Melanesia (Solomon Islands, Vanuatu and New Caledonia/Kanaky) at the Lambeth Conference which, every 10 years, brings together in the UK over 600 Church leaders from every corner of the worldwide Anglican Communion. Bishops from Australia and many UK friends also attended the event last night in Canterbury, England.

Demontrators ordered to disband in Abepura

Jayapura: A group of demonstrating students from the Coalition of Students and the Community Concerned about the Land of Papua (KMMPTP) were ordered to disband by police units in Abepura for failing to comply with procedures stipulated in Law 9/1998 about expressing views in public. They were intending to hold a peaceful demonstration outside the office of the MRP[Papuan People's Assembly].
