Military’s involvement in terror agency dangerous, ICG warns

The International Crisis Group (ICG) warned on Monday of possible dangers of military involvement in the newly established National Anti-Terror Agency (BNPT).
ICG director for Southeast Asia Sidney Jones said the danger stemmed from the possibility of “increased competition between the Indonesian Military (TNI) and the police over terrorism in the agency”.

Voice of West Papua reaches Poland

The voice of West Papua’s struggle for freedom reached Gdynia in the Baltic region of northern Poland this weekend, as Globaltica Festival hosted the first ever performance of West Papuan music in the country.
Led by West Papuan independence leader Benny Wenda, the Lani Singers played a one hour set of freedom songs on Sunday evening. The Lani Singers were joined by Oridek Ap, son of the legendary West Papuan musician Arnold Ap who was executed in cold blood by the Indonesian military in 1985.

West Papuan protests voice discontent with Indonesian rule

Thousands of West Papuans rallied in the local capital Jayapura on July 7 to demand the provincial legislature reject the region’s special autonomy status within Indonesia and call for a referendum on self-determination. An upper house of tribal leaders, the Papuan People’s Assembly (MRP), voted in June to reject Papua’s autonomy status, which was introduced in 2001.

IPWP and ILWP plan to challenge Act of Free Choice (pepera)
The chairman of the KNPB, the National Committee of West Papua, Buchtar
Tabuni has told the press that his organisation is preparing to
consolidate and mobilise large numbers of people to occupy town centres,
making the following demands: Pepera, the Act of Free Choice is unlawful and must be handed back. A
referendum should be held as soon as possible. International
Parliamentarians for West Papua, the IPWP, and International Lawyers for
West Papua, the ILWP, together with the Vanuatu government should
facilitate efforts to challenge the legal and political status of West
Papua at the UN. And the KNPB wants to mediate the referendum by the people.

On Friday, 9 July 2010 TNI/Polri forces shot dead a TPN/OPM member sent from the Tingginambut headquarters in Kampung Jambi. NUMBUNGGA GIRE died at the hands of the Indonesian security apparatus and was then cremated by OPM members and villagers in Kampung Jambi.
