Benny Wenda is a West Papuan independence leader and an international lobbyist for the independence of West Papua from Indonesia. Mr. Wenda was put on trial in 2002 for allegedly leading a procession of people in an independence rally. He escaped from prison and was smuggled to the UK by an NGO, where he has been recognized as a refugee.
